This page shows the tortoise selection we generally carry.
Please see the "Available Now" page for what we have in stock.
Note:
I KNOW for a fact you can find russian tortoises for cheap (less than
$100) at PetCo and other LOW quality pet stores. Let me just say any
russian tortoise you see for around 100 bucks is WILD CAUGHT...meaning
stolen from the wild, LITERALLY piled in sacks or crates with hundreds
of other tortoises (no food, water, heat, etc) and shipped over to the
states.
So you tell me, whats cheaper? $80 for a tortoise that you will have to
spend 5 HUNDRED more dollars to cure them of many diseases and
parasites, or $200 or so for a tortoise that is healthy?
By the way...last time I saw a Captive bred russian tortoise in a pet store, it was $400.
Yes, I feel very strongly about this issue...You should read my story about Yevgeni sometime to find out why...
BOYCOTT IMPORTED, WILD CAUGHT TORTOISES!

Who are you trying to kid? Captive born Russian tortoises are all over the
place for $100-125. Wild caught are $65 to $100 each. If you want to try
to make a killing at $200 each don't try to justify by attempting to
sticker shock people or give them false information. What prove do you
have that the Russians you are selling are captive born? I hope not
someone's word on it!

Hi, thanks for writing!
I have yet to see a single captive bred russian tortoise at a PET STORE
for under $400 (unfortunately stores have to charge a little more than
they paid to stay in buisness). In fact I've only seen a single pet
store (in Connecticut) that sold captive bred russians. And they were
$400 each.
But, if you know of a pet store that sells captive bred russians for
cheaper (especially one within 50 miles of me), I've love to know, as
I'd totally shake their hand.
Please let me know.
Oh, and I mean TRULY captive bred. Not farm raised, which is a name
quite a few distributors are using these days. Farmed raised is just
another name for wild caught really. Very little difference.
If you see a russian tortoise in any pet store for under my price, they
are either full of baloney when they say they are captive bred, OR they
are breeders themselves or have a heck of a deal going on with a
breeder nearby (which is doubtful because I havn't found any russian
breeders in the New England area).
My proof of them being captive bred is that I bought them both from...well...breeders! :)
The (almost) 5 year old came from a breeder in Florida. He was about
2.5 inches long when I got him (I have a picture if you'd like to see
it). He was born 12/26/03. I raised him myself to full grown.
Unfortunately, it costs money to raise a tortoise to full grown, and
breeding, size (food, electricity, equipment, vet visits, etc). Heck,
if you just figure the cost of UVB lamps alone you're looking at $400
(a new bulb every six months at $40+ a piece <did you know the
phosphors in UVB bulbs burn out after 6 months?>)
The '2 year old' is now actually about 3 years old (I haven't updated
that part of the site lately...sorry). I bought him when he was just
about 4 inches, from a breeder in California named Joe. Not sure of
the exact birthday, but I raised him to about 5 inches now.
When I originally brought him into the store, he was housed with 3
others, one of which turned rather agressive and bit his neck.
Degloved one side of the neck in fact. I rushed him to Tufts
university (the ONLY place in the area who can handle exotic pet
emergencies at 7pm at night). The vet bills cost $197.43. I could
send you a copy of the bill if you'd like. FYI, he's perfectly healed
now.
Also, both breeders are breeders in good standing. Both are very professional and wouldn't lie to people.
Also, its very easy to recognize the signs of a wild caught animal vs a captive bred one.
Also, you're never going to see a wild caught russian over 5 or 6 inches imported.
So lets see, vet bills, UVB lamps, food, the price I paid for the
animals themselves (and I can honestly say I paid a decent amount), and
overnight shipping (usually costing about $35-$40 dollars)...
So tell me my friend...am I making a killing?
I really try to run a pet store that looks at the animals as something OTHER
than just inventory. I will do what I need to do for the animals, even
if it does mean I lose money in the end.
Thank you for your concern, but as you can see I am here for the animals, not money.
I personally could make more money working for McDonalds
...I wish that was a joke...
Thanks for writing!

Sorry, I do not normally carry any water based turtles. Why? The cost. Yes, i could sell you a red ear slider for $20, but the cost of the equipment to keep them in is enormous. Usually several hundred dollars.
If you really are interested in an aquatic turtle, let me know and I'll give you the run down of what you'll need.
